The most interesting journey of my life is the weight loss journey. As a kid I was chubby. My mom and dad tried their best to make me shed some kilos. I tried but it never worked out. When I was a teen , I faced many health hazards for being overweight. When I joined my MBA I realized that it was not only important to stay fit for the well being of myself it was equally important to look good and fitness would lead me towards my achievement. My work involved a rigorous field job and interactions with different people and I managed to stay cool due to my mental peace which I believe I achieved through my fitness activities. Unlike other Bengali girls who tend to gain weight after their marriage I managed to loose some(4 kgs in 3 months). I got married on January 2014 and my diet plan was completely messed up in the month of December, 2013 as my relatives, neighbors and family friends invited me to offer "Maiden Rice" ( Aiburo Bhat) as a reflection of their love and blessings. After an uninterrupted series of big , fat Indian lunch and dinner I found myself in my chubby avtaar and all my workout and diet went into vain.
A sense of guilt haunted me throughout the wedding days. And after I stepped into my new house I found that people are crazy about food. They have a lavish and elaborate menu planning session everyday for every meal.. It was difficult for me to say no the sweets and other unhealthy stuffs for the first few days. Then I discovered a treadmill and some other fitness equipment just next to my bedroom.. It was a wow moment for me. I was relived and I got a motivation from my inner self. I used to practice yoga and some stretching exercise.I went through a quick revise session and took the help of some yoga videos from the internet. I told my mother in law that I don't really love to have sweets with every meal and requested her if she could manage to convince my Grandma in law to stop her from feeding me with sweets. I told her that I want to divide my meals in five or six small meals. She is a darling. She had shown her support in every level of my fitness decision making. I chalked out my new diet and resumed my work out sessions. It was proven effective.
I start my day with Yoga comprising Surya Namaskar, Bhujangasan, Dhanurasan, Padmasan etc followed by Pranayam like Kapalbhati and meditation. It gives me a sense of pleasure and peace. I try to run on the treadmill everyday at a convenient time for 20- 30 minutes. My diet chart is somewhat like this now-
Early Morning- (6.30a.m)
1 glass of lukewarm water with the juice of one lemon.
1 small cup of Methi ( Fenugreek) soaked water. ( It helps me to fight with my water retention)
2 Almonds soaked in water on the previous night. ( Reduces muscle cramp and helps to maintain s good skin and hair.)
Morning(7.30 a.m)
Tea - 1 cup with 2 cream cracker biscuit. ( I have milk tea as I love the taste of Assam tea and not very fond of a good flavor. Strong liquor is preferable).
Breakfast- ( 8.30 a.m)
Oats with milk / cornflakes with milk/ bread ( without butter or jam)
seasonal fruit. ( I prefer the citrus one, as I need vitamin c to fight with the cough and cold in a frequent interval)
Mid morning -( 11.30a.m)
Salt lassi and a cucumber or 4-5 small wedges of watermelon.
Lunch-
Rice is a must have in lunch in my family. I restrict myself to 1 small cup of rice. I have the pulses and the sabzis to fulfill my appetite. And like every bengali family we emphasize on fish for the protein source.
Evening snacks- Sometimes I go for carrot cucumber sandwich or just puffed rice with roasted grams.
Dinner- Now this time I try to be tricky as we all sit together to have our dinner. And the head of the family our grandma keenly monitors the plate with an array of questions. It is hard to make her believe that I can't eat a plateful food at dinner. I have one or two rotis with daal, sabzi, a piece of chicken or fish or egg ( well she thinks this is equivalent to nothing) and I ask for a permission to stop eating. I ask my maid to remove the plate soon else grandma would love to treat me with a rasgulla or a bowl of kheer.
I am enjoying my life in the new place. Some adjustments are so spontaneous that I never feel that it actually happened. I am thankful to my husband and my in laws for supporting me. Loosing weight is not just fun but also a process of self evaluation. It increases the self confidence, PR skills ( Mark my word, you would love to interact with people with a free mind) , and helps to bond you with the family( How can I forget to mention the bottle of water my mom-in law offers me after my work out session or my father in law's motivation!) Life is great and sometimes loosing is good.
